Expert care to prevent and manage gum disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common condition but many people are often unaware they have it. If left untreated, gum disease can affect gum tissue and the bone that holds your teeth in place, leading to a wobbly and unsupported smile. Gum disease can be reversed if caught during the early stages, but can only be managed and controlled if left untreated. Our expert team is here to help keep your mouth healthy and whole.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by the plaque that builds up daily on teeth. If it is not removed by effective brushing, it can turn into hard tartar and begin to irritate the gums, causing redness and pain. In some cases, the body’s immune system can overreact to the plaque deposits, and start to break down the gum tissue and even bone.

The first stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, causes gums to become irritated and swollen, bleeding easily. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, a more destructive stage. This causes receding gums, wobbly teeth and even tooth loss. Despite the destructive nature of this process, there may only be mild symptoms even at a late stage.

How is gum disease treated?

The best way to prevent gum disease is to make sure plaque is removed from your teeth effectively and regularly. At your regular hygiene appointments, we deep clean your teeth with a scale and polish treatment, greatly reducing your risk of gum disease.

We give you advice for your home oral hygiene routine, including how to use interdental brushes to clean between your teeth. We also discuss other ways you can reduce the risk of gum disease, including stopping smoking, reducing stress and eating a well-balanced diet.

If your gum disease has progressed, we can carry out further treatment, including root planing, gum grafts and even surgical procedures, to help you manage the condition effectively.
