On 28th march 2013 the General Dental Council agreed to lift the restriction on Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists to see patients on prescription from a dentist only.

The policy came in to effect on 1st May 2013.

So, patients can now seek many treatments from these Dental Care Professionals without having to see a Dentist first.

A Dental Hygienist can carry out the following duties:

• Oral hygiene instruction
• Scaling and polishing
• Root surface debridement
• Recovery of indices
• Application of all medicamnets.
